Everything you need to know before booking your workshop.

Booking & Logistics

What is your cancellation policy?

Reservations are non-refundable. However, we understand that life happens! If you cannot make your scheduled session, your reservation can be transferred to another day. We require at least 24 hours' notice for all reschedules. If you need to change your date, please contact us as soon as possible. Texting 415 717 6660 is the fastest way to reach us, or you can email us at hello@petalumatuftingstudio.com.

Can I bring a friend to watch?

Shared Frames: If you book a 24 inch or 30 inch frame, you are welcome to have a second person join you to work on that single rug together. For all other sizes, every person in the studio must have their own paid reservation.

Family Workshop Policy: Children aged 10 and over are welcome to join the fun! A parent or guardian must remain present in the studio during the session to help ensure a safe and successful experience at any frame size chosen.

What happens if I'm running late?

Class starts promptly with a safety and machine demo. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you may be asked to simplify your design to ensure you finish on time, as we cannot extend workshop hours

What is the age requirement?

Our workshops are designed for participants aged 10 and older. For safety and support, all minors must be accompanied by an adult throughout the entire tufting session.

Design & Preparation

How do I choose a design?

Simple Outlines Work Best
Look for images with bold, clear lines. Designs that look like a coloring book page or a simple cartoon are much easier to tuft and turn out looking terrific. A great trick is to search for your favorite subject plus the words "outline" or "stencil."

Do you provide the yarn?

Yes! We provide all materials. We stock a massive inventory of professional-grade 8-ply yarn in over 50 colors. We use 8-ply exclusively because it provides double the density and a plush, high-end feel that standard yarns can't match. To ensure quality and machine consistency, we do not allow outside yarn.

What size rug will I make?

We offer four tiers to fit your vision. Note: Any frame can be shared by one adult and one child (under 12) at no extra cost!

  • The Express: 14 x 14 Capacity: 1 Person OR 1 Adult + 1 Child The perfect "taster" session for wall accents or mini mirrors.
  • The Hobbyist: 20 x 20 Capacity: 1 Person OR 1 Adult + 1 Child Our most popular size, offering nearly 3x the area of the Express.
  • The Standard: 24 x 24 Capacity: 1 Person OR 1 Adult + 1 Child The classic rug experience for a statement floor or wall piece.
  • The Duo Rug: 30 x 30 Capacity: Up to 2 People (Perfect for 1 Solo Artist, 2 Adults, or 1 Adult + 1 Child) Our largest frame, perfect for an ambitious solo project or a collaborative masterpiece.

The Workshop Experience

Is tufting difficult?

It’s an active experience, but we make it accessible. We use the AK-V tufting gun, which is one of the lightest and most ergonomic machines on the market (only 2.5lb). You’ll be standing for several hours, but we provide a full safety demo and hands-on coaching throughout.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, closed-toed shoes are mandatory. We recommend clothes you don’t mind getting a little "yarn lint" on—avoid loose sleeves or dangling jewelry for safety.

When do I get my rug?

You take it home the same day! We handle the professional gluing and backing application in-studio, and you’ll do the final trimming and shaving so your rug is ready for the wall or floor the moment you leave.

Rug Care & Maintenance

Can I wash my rug?

Hand-tufted rugs should not be machine-washed or submerged in water. For cleaning, we recommend a gentle vacuum (without a beater bar) or spot-cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap.

Can I use this as a floor rug?

Yes! Our rugs are finished with professional-grade adhesive and backing. However, because they are handmade works of art, they live their best lives in low-traffic areas or displayed as wall hangings.

Ready to create your rug?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of
a page when looking at its layout.
